Top ten Bruce Springsteen songs

9. Tougher Than The Rest
Taken from the album "Tunnel of Love" (Columbia, 1987)

This one also could be seen as a weird choice, maybe I'm a weird person. Well, the album Tunnel of Love was the first Springsteen album I heard. It was the only one my mom had when I was little. She even says that she didn't like it all that much. So I grew up thinking that this Springsteen fellow wasn't worth spending time on. Later on, when I was in high school, one of our teacher suddenly came in to the classroom demanding to be called "The Boss" and whatnot. He even quoted Springsteen on the blackboard when he introduced himself to us.

"It ain't no secret I've been around a time or two
I don't know baby maybe you've been around too
There's another dance all you gotta do is say yes
And if you're rough and ready and ready for love
Honey, I'm tougher than the rest.."

Well, he didn't write that whole thing, I guess he focused on the tougher than the rest part. As well as he had been around a time or two, in the meaning that we wouldn't scare or fool him. Kind of a cool teacher. I didn't see it then, but he had a lot of influence on me.

Back to the song then. The lyrics are kind of corny but still manages to take a hold of you. You get that this guy is a blue-collar who has been burned in the past, but now is ready for love. A dependable guy. At least that's what I think. He understands that the girl/woman is hurt, and because he also has been hurt he don't want her to feel that way again - and she won't because he is, well, tougher than the rest. Springsteen himself was going through a divorce before making Tunnel of Love.

Musically you got eighties production and the "L.A. Law"- keyboardsound (sounds a bit like wind-chimes or something) which I just love. Yeah, I'm a weird guy.

"The road is dark and it's a thin thin line
But I want you to know I'll walk it for you anytime.."

I received the Springsteen book "For You", and I was really blown away If any book can capture what it's like to be at a Springsteen show, this is it. The images are as good as concert photos get.
