Innlandet Hestejazz Society | Soft Focus | Moonshine Blends Vol. 6

One of my favourite musical genres, if not THEE favourite, is when the west coast country rock scene goes all smooth. The twangy guitars and bluegrass elements gets replaced with cynical studio perfection and ultra clean lines. As a lot of what went “wrong” with the scene in the mid 70s, you can probably blame it all on the Eagles. They took the sound of the Burritos and smoothed down the edges, and suddenly country rock was the shit.

The record companies wanted the sound of the Eagles or Steely Dan, and presto, everyone was knee deep in soft rock. I for one love that change from country rock to soft rock, and have done for years. I am not too fond of the term yacht rock, but hey, what about lawyer rock, since all the bands sound like law firms you don’t want on your back.

The members and the spirit of the original L.A. rockers Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds are all over the place on this mix. CSN, Firefall, The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, and McGuinn, Clark & Hillman all have ties that bind with the Sunset Strip scene. Spoiler: There is a lot of Chris Hillman on this mix, he is a hero of ours. Speaking of heroes, Buzz Feiten is naturally here, as a part of the legendary Larsen/Feiten Band

There is a lot of hits here, but also some not so star studded players that you may not have heard of. Wendy Waldman and Judie Tzuke are two artists that you should check out. Speaking of hits, the set closes out with the gang that started it all and regretted nothing, the Eagles, and finally the Dead goes disco with the help of Lowell George.

Some call it cheesy, others say it’s greasy, me on the other hand, I call it breezy.

Welcome to the cruise.

Yours truly,
David Jønsson, aka DJ Rolf Paulsen.

Innlandet Hestejazz Society is a moniker that my good friend David Jønsson and me use when we are dj'ing around Oslo. Though to call it dj'ing might be an overstatement, we play records and have a good time. As crate diggers and heads we were drawn to the country-rock and the flying freak flags when we met behind the counter of a record store many years ago. Moonshine Blends are mixes of tunes we would have played in bars, but since we are confined to our own living rooms we are putting them up on the net for everyones pleasure. So tune in for some vibey west coast, hillbilly hobnobs, no-depression and blue collar country. Jerry Garcia, Johnny Paycheck and Jeff Tweedy hand in hand. Keep on truckin'!
