Innlandet Hestejazz Society | Moonshine Blends Vol. 10

Jerry Garcia on pedal steel: PERRO and beyond.

One thing I love seeing on a record, is the words «Jerry Garcia: pedal steel».

The Jer-bear himself took on playing the pedal steel for fun, and the word fun is what springs to mind while listening to Jerry’s tasty licks.

Natural choices for a greatest hits mix of Garcia’s pedal steel contributions, contains Dead in the Workingman’s Dead/American Beauty-era, and of course early New Riders. But his best work stems from the PERRO-gang.

The Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra consisted of members of Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Paul Kantner named this crew while recording Crosby’s If I Could Only Remember My Name. And Garcia’s best moment on pedal steel is arguably Laughing, that kicks off this mix.

The record that made me want to geek off with this mix, is Link Wray’s Be What You Want To from 1973. A record that does not match his brilliant eponymous album from ‘71, but it is damn close.

Some of these songs are huge hits, the rest of them should be. Let’s raise a glass to the 9 and 1/2 fingered pedal steel maestro!

Until next time,
David.

Innlandet Hestejazz Society is a moniker that my good friend David Jønsson and me use when we are dj'ing around Oslo. Though to call it dj'ing might be an overstatement, we play records and have a good time. As crate diggers and heads we were drawn to the country-rock and the flying freak flags when we met behind the counter of a record store many years ago. Moonshine Blends are mixes of tunes we would have played in bars, but since we are confined to our own living rooms we are putting them up on the net for everyones pleasure. So tune in for some vibey west coast, hillbilly hobnobs, no-depression and blue collar country. Jerry Garcia, Johnny Paycheck and Jeff Tweedy hand in hand. Keep on truckin'!
