Innlandet Hestejazz Society | Moonshine Blends Vol. 12

And we’re back.

The theme this time around, is rural rock linking up with another fave genre of mine, power pop. There has always been a strong connection. Just take a look at the scruffy posterboy of this mix, Sir Alex Chilton holding a copy of the Untitled album by The Byrds, in 1970.

Alex Chilton is present on this mix, together with the Chilton-worshipping Replacements, Teenage Fanclub, Gene Clark, and Nick Lowe. The Alt. Country-scene is also included, with early Wilco, Whiskeytown, and Richmond Fontaine. For all the heads out there, I’ve included a couple of nuggets, for instance Sensation, which is in fact A SENSATION, check out their eponymous album from ‘76. A lost lo-fi power-pop classic. A tip from Frode from I Was A King, just to hammer in the point of the link between country rock and power pop.

I conclude the mix with Stampeders, and their classic Stick By You, introduced to me by the good ol’ Sugarfoot at one of their gigs.

Giddy up!
- Dave.

Innlandet Hestejazz Society is a moniker that my good friend David Jønsson and me use when we are dj'ing around Oslo. Though to call it dj'ing might be an overstatement, we play records and have a good time. As crate diggers and heads we were drawn to the country-rock and the flying freak flags when we met behind the counter of a record store many years ago. Moonshine Blends are mixes of tunes we would have played in bars, but since we are confined to our own living rooms we are putting them up on the net for everyones pleasure. So tune in for some vibey west coast, hillbilly hobnobs, no-depression and blue collar country. Jerry Garcia, Johnny Paycheck and Jeff Tweedy hand in hand. Keep on truckin'!
